LAUGHTER
Such a flimsy escape. It filled Fool’s head as Joker begged to be let out, for Fool to leave reality. But today Fool fought the urge to relax into the lucid happiness that came with the laughter and the little twinges of fabulous pain. No, today he had work. If he didn’t work now, he’d get beaten worse later, and that was never good. Shakily, he kept his hands to the wires visible in the open panel of the wall. The experimental area was usual in such good condition; Fool couldn’t remember ever actually getting a chance to work on the locks. He considered this a break, and did has he was told with the slightest smile.
FAKE LAUGHTER
After fixing the locks, Fool was led to the dining area. Not that he’d be lost. They didn’t trust him. They shouldn’t have anyway. If he had the power, he would have left the mill ages ago. His white dappled black ears flicked forward at a whispered joke from another NEKO, and he forced himself to laugh quietly in return. Joker didn’t find the joke funny, but he did find Fool’s attempt to make himself laugh hilarious, so he laughed along with the fake laughter.
APOLOGETIC LAUGHTER
Fool just wanted to sleep. Really. It was all he was asking, but no, one of the other NEKO had run into him and for a moment he had to stop and think about what he could do. It wasn’t like he could just ignore the action, but it wasn’t his fault either. He just shrugged and followed Joker’s example. He muttered a quick sorry and then gave a little apologetic laugh. The other NEKO looked at him and then shrugged, moving down the hall again.
STIFLED LAUGHTER
In the morning Fool was allowed outside. For once he actually wasn’t scared of his own shadow, of the wind moving across the field. He sat at the edge of the fenced area as close to the fence as he could be without being in danger of a shock, and looked at a ladybug. He tentatively reached out a hand to the insect, and it climbed on. Picking the bug up, Fool gave a little stifled giggle because today felt special somehow. He wasn’t scared. Not as much as usual anyway. Still, the stifled laughter died when Joker joined in because Joker just soured the emotion.
PAINED LAUGHTER
Fool went back to the locks in the early afternoon, but he blacked out early in and was taken to the veterinary hall. Not that they did anything, but he rested. And he dreamed of some place where he wasn’t chained down in some metaphorical space. The dream took him to a place beyond the fence, perhaps still enslaved, but free of these walls. Anything would be better than this prison. Fool woke laughing. In longing for some sort of half freedom.
A CHILD’S LAUGHTER
In the end, that afternoon, Fool was brought to the adoption hall and displayed. It wasn’t often that he was displayed, but someone must have noticed his slightly more chipper attitude today and decided to give him a chance. Still, it wasn’t like he expected anything. He wasn’t pretty, with his two-color hair and his ears and tail that looked like they’d had milk or glue sprayed on them with a toothbrush. He’d try his best, though. He knew that was all he could do, so he played up the cute factor, letting a child’s laugh burble from his lips like those first notes he’d heard from Joker.
But in the end laughter would do Fool no good, because laughter couldn’t save him from the insanity or the mill or the terror of a nightmare that wouldn’t end. In the end, Fool was stuck. And he was slipping lower and lower.
